New bike (again)

  • deutsch

My new Kona Coiler 2007I know, I just bought a bike a couple of weeks ago. And it is still running, although I have to admit that meanwhile even $50 seem to be too much. But never mind. And then, last week, a dude from the climbing gym advertises his almost new Kona Coiler. That’s 150mm travel front and rear plus some upgrades such as XTR rear and XT front derailer and some Tioga parts. I checked it out yesterday – and bought it. It’s in a really good condition and definitely a bargain. As an early Easter egg he added two Look click pedals to the package.

Brad, from whom I bought the bike, happens to work in a consulting company and we had chat about jobs. I’ll send him my CV and who knows, maybe something comes out of it!

New address

On 1 March we moved into this nice little place in Hawthorn. Lindsay helped us a lot, providing his uncles trailer and his own manpower to shift the furniture and several boxes. The appartments location near the river, BBQ facilities just a few meters away and the proximity to city and Bridge Road with all their shops and restaurants is a really nice change to the somewhat more remote North Balwyn. A great deal of furnishing has to be done yet but we’re getting there. If only the TV worked so I can watch Lost …

The map shows actually some more places around Melbourne where I am somehow connected to.
The new address is

Moonlight Cinema

Moonlight CinemaThe other night at the Moonlight Cinema we saw “3.10 To Yuma”. If you like Western then you should definitely go and see it. A story about honor, bullets and a really cool bad guy …
I also managed to get some interesting shots of the Australia Day fireworks!

Climbing and the quest for a bicycle

  • deutsch

A couple of weeks ago I caught up with Rich at the Grampians. He had posted on Chockstone.org that he was looking for a climbing partner and I was free so why not shoot up to the Grampians for a couple of days? I also met Peter there, an Italian traveller. For the first time I went to Mt. Arapiles, one of the best crags in Australia. Mainly trad climbing and perfect rock in a nice setting. Here you can see the pictures in the Gallery.
I’ve also tried to find a bike pretty much since I arrived – several auctions on ebay I just missed due to stupidity or other bikes got sold minutes before I called the owner. Finally I found a stylish street racer that will hopefully last a couple of months – that’s all I’m expecting for 50 bucks.

Julie’s Admission Ceremony

The other day Julie got admitted as a lawyer in the Supreme Court. Quite a long ceremony followed by an $800 lunch (for five!) at Silks in the Crown complex. Yummy! | See the pictures

Was bisher geschah …

Khao Niao Ma-Muang

  • deutsch

… or “Mango Sticky Rice” is THE delicious dessert in Thailand. And easy to make yourself. All you need is

  • one or two ripe Mango (Banana or other fruit is fine, too)
  • 500 ml coconut milk (containing 100 % milk)
  • Two cups / 500 g sticky (glutenous) rice
  • 50 g sugar
  • A pinch of salt

Wash the rice and leave it in water overnight or at least a couple of hours. Then drain the rice and steam it for about 30 min or until it is soft but still chewy. Meanwhile heat up the coconut milk and stir the sugar and salt in it. Pour 3/4 of the coconut milk over the rice and let it soak for 15 min. Scoop the rice out into a dish, pour the remaining milk over it and put some sliced fruit. Enjoy your Khao Niao Ma-Muang!

Back in Bangkok

Sitting here in the sticky air in an internet cafe, looking at some photos of Tonsai and Ao Laoliang, makes me think of the great time we’ve had so far in Thailand. Now we’re spending the last days in Bangkok to do some last shopping (I finally found another tailor where I can get a suit with the fabric that I’d wanted back in Chiang Mai) and visit the Royal Palace. And in a couple of days I’ll be in Melbourne where Lindsay is organising a “welcome back” party – great idea, mate!
