Dementsprechend hoch waren meine Erwartungen, meine Vorfreude und meine Aufregung.

Im Anschluss an meinen Tasmanientrip ging es zurück nach Melbourne. Dort wollte ich ein paar Wochen mit alten Freunden abhängen, Kaffee trinken und die Sonne geniessen.
Von Cradle Mountain aus ging es noch am selben Abend zurück nach Launceston, wo ich eine kurze Nacht im City Backpackers verbracht. Am nächsten Morgen hatte sich das Wetter deutlich verbesser, also machte ich mich noch einmal auf den Weg an die Ostküste, um der Freycinet Peninsular einen zweiten Besuch abzustatten.
Cradle Mountain. Der Startpunkt des berühmten Overland Track, der 5-7 Tage durch die Tasmanische Wildnis führt. Laut Wetterstatistik nicht gerade das sonnigste Plätzchen dieser Erde: “Kaltes, nasses Wetter beherrscht die Gegend um Cradle Mountain. Von zehn Tagen regnet es im Durchschnitt an sieben, an acht Tagen ist es bewölkt und die Sonne scheint durchgehend nur an einem Tag. An 54 Tagen pro Jahr schneit es, sogar im Sommer sind Schneestürme keine Seltenheit.” Gemäß dem Motto “traue keiner Statisktik die du nicht selbst gefälscht hast” ging es trotzdem hoffnungsvoll am frühen Morgen in den Park.
Eigentlich war geplant, irgendwo auf oder in der Nähe der Freycinet Peninsular das Zelt aufzuschlagen. Da es aber auf dem Weg von Port Arthur nach Norden schon recht dunkel wurde, enschlossen wir uns kurzerhand, eines der im Lonely Planet erwähnten Hostels anzurufen. Wir hatten Glück und bekamen die letzten verfügbaren Betten im Bicheno Backpackers.
